Our Opening and Closing Night Receptions for this year’s Toronto Human Rights Watch Film Festival were a tremendous success, bringing together HRW committee members, donors, staff and friends.

Both receptions were followed by screenings and speeches delivered by our various committee members, staff and special guests.

Human Rights Watch would like to thank all those who attended as well as TIFF, the Canada Committee and the Toronto Network.

Tonight’s film “Granito” promises to expose an extraordinary and haunting tale of genocide and delayed justice that spans four decades, two films, and director Pamela Yates’ own career.

“Granito: How to Nail a Dictator” follows the International Criminal Court case against former General of the Guatemalan Army, Efraín Ríos Montt on charges of genocide. Director Pamela Yates captures the only known footage of the slaughter of the Mayan people which is used 25 years later as evidence in Montt’s trial. “Granito” follows this story, detailing how each person can contribute their own granito, or grain of sand, to the reconstruction of collective memory and the pursuit of justice.

The film, directed by Giulia Amati and Stephen Natanson exposes the charged atmosphere of life in Hebron, the largest city in the occupied West Bank. With 160,00 Palestinian residents and 600 Israeli settlers, the film captures the often tumultuous day-to-day living of these unwilling neighbours.

We will be joined by Director Stephen Natanson via Skype!
