Synopsis
A wrenching portrait of the displacements wrought by poverty, Familia observes Daniel and Naty, a middle-aged couple living in Peru. Unable to pay for their eight-year-old son’s education, Naty takes a job as a hotel maid in Spain. Shuttling back and forth between continents and interpolating black-and-white photographs from the family album, Wiström and Herskovits movingly capture both Naty’s loneliness in a foreign land and the pain of a family torn apart while trying to provide a better life for their children.
