Tickets are now on sale for Opening Night of the 8th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival, a co-presentation of Human Rights Watch and TIFF Bell Lightbox.

The evening’s celebrations include a 6 PM reception at Malaparte, located on the 6th floor at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, followed by the Canadian premiere of Ali Samadi Ahadi’s documentary, The Green Wave.

The Green Wave is a taste of what documentary filmmaking might become in the era of social networking. The film is a collage of real life footage and animation, based entirely on blog posts that were written by a number of anonymous Iranians who experienced the aftermath of the 2009 election chaos in Tehran.

Guest speaker for the evening is Dr. Payam Akhavan, Professor of International Law at McGill University, and co-founder of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre.  Dr. Akhavan is one of several human rights activists featured in the film.

Tickets for the reception and screening are $100 per person. Please call (416) 322-8448 or e-mail ashs@hrw.org by February 18, 2011 to secure your place.

Tickets for the screening only can be purchased online at tiff.net, by phone at 416-599-TIFF (8433) and 1-888-599-8433, or in person at TIFF Bell Lightbox Box Office, Reitman Square, 350 King Street West, Toronto.

The Green Wave opens the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, Tuesday, February 22, 2011, 8 PM at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Cinema 1.

THE GREEN WAVE Trailer (ENGLISH) from Jan Krueger on Vimeo.

In this powerful and urgent documentary, filmmaker Ali Samadi Ahadi integrates animation with live-action footage, testimonials, and posts from courageous Iranian bloggers, who dared to tell the world about the uprising in Iran and its devastating consequences.

The film takes reference from blog entries to develop and animate the story of two fictional students. This is contrasted with more traditional documentary story elements, including real video images of the revolt and interviews with human rights activists.

The Green Wave opens the 8th annual Toronto Human Rights Watch Film Festival on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 8 PM. Tickets to the Opening Reception, hosted by the Human Rights Watch Canada Committee, can be purchased by calling the Human Rights Watch office at 416-322-8448. Tickets to the 8 PM screening are now on sale to the general public. Buy Tickets.
